Gramya
Profile: The
main target of Gramya is to support women's initiatives and to stand
for the right of the female and/or the working child. Gramya is mainly
working in a tribal area, East of Hyderabad, with the Lambada Tribals,
who face extreme difficulties in their daily lives. The local authorities
neglect the area, there is hardly any infrastructure or medical facilities
and the Lambadas are mainly very poor. With their programmes, Gramya
tries to improve the difficult situation by providing people with practical
support like road construction and bus service; counselling in their
social problems is also part of the programme.

Deccan
Development Society (DDS)
Profile: The
aim of the Deccan Development Society (DDS) is and has always been:
to reach the poorest of the poor in helping rural development through
the use of innovative interventions. Right from the beginning DDS has
done this through training a 'barefoot' cadre. This means that the people
are trained to become their own barefoot doctors, barefoot agricultural
experts and barefoot extension workers. DDS runs several projects at
present. One of these is the support and strengthening of 'Sanghams'
or women groups that help enhance women in e.g. land development activities,
thrift and credit and education. In the execution of the programmes,
DDS pays a lot of attention to a 'green way' or environmentally friendly
way of working.
Their other recent
activities are developing wastelands, introduction of permaculture,
organising health jatras (exhibitions), motivating people to use herbal
medicine instead of allopathic medicine, summer camps for the children,
literacy programmes for both children and adults and running a 'green'
school.
