Programme Title: Day care centre for the children of widows, deserted, divided single parents and working mothers in quarries, crushing units, garment factories and construction sites.

Target area:

The target area belongs to the Municipal council of Bommanahalli, Bangalore South Taluk, Karnataka State.

Target group:
The target group is children below 6 years of age. They are children of the families migrated from Tamil Nadu, Unhygienic living conditions who are very poor and live below the poverty line. The women are employed in quarries, stone crushing units, construction, vegetable vending, rag picking and some are involved in garment making. They live in unhygienic surroundings close to their work place in makeshift tents. Women suffer exploitation at work, sexual exploitation, desertion, divorce, death of their husbands and social evil like alcoholism.

Problem definition:
Children of daily wage labourers have a very little chance of entering government schooling. Woman working on construction sitesParents normally take them to their place of work and the children are exposed to harsh physical risks. They suffer from malnutrition, are illiterate and prone to diseases. Some children are victims of sexual and alcohol abuse. .

Quarries are dangerous for children

Objectives:
The main objective of this programme is to create a homely atmosphere for the children and promote their psychological and personal development.

Activities:

  • establish a day care that will provide for 25 children
  • fulfill their need of pre-school education achieved through day care activities and the Orient Longman pre-school kit. Regular Health Check up of children at the day care centre
  • Provide a healthy environment, room to play, playing equipment and a supply of nutritional meals
  • To enable regular health check ups and immunisation

Expected Result:
The 25 pre school children will be provided with the necessary means of physical, mental, social, and emotional development at the most formative stage of their lives.
