- Situation Analysis,
Problem Identification and Project Formulation
BHC uses
its technical knowledge in Animal Husbandry and Rural development
for data-collection and analysis in the field. The analysis conducted,
using participatory methods, is then used for either project formulation
or writing the project proposal as per the need. BHC also helps NGOs
to formulate programmes.
Example: BHC worked with the NGO PROSLADA and a
group of 25 other NGOs to prepare a project document on planning of
Animal Husbandry Activities to improve the livelihood of Dalits. The
results of the PRAs and interviews were integrated into the document,
which was sent by BHC to Donor agencies in The Netherlands.
- Preparation
of project proposals and fundraising
To have a well-documented project proposal is crucial in generating
resources. BHC initiates activities by writing the project proposals
at the request of NGOs. They regularly face the problem of proper
formulation of the project in the format the donor expects.
- Participatory
Rural Appraisal (PRA) activities
BHC conducts PRA exercises for NGOs. Training programmes have
been developed in Participatory methods. We conduct PRA training for
NGO-Staff.
- Technical Advice
BHC offers
technical know-how and experience in the field of Animal Husbandry
to NGOs, to introduce or improve animal production in the villages
Examples:
*The ex-ante analysis conducted on the increased digestibility of
Sorghum and Straw for the International Livestock Research Institute
(ILRI). With the help of computer simulation programmes "realistic"
predictions were provided for the possible benefits in energy surplus
with the use of improved straw varieties.
* Design
of a ration formulation programme for large-scale dairy buffalo farms
in Hyderabad.

- Monitoring
and Evaluation
As an extension of preparing and submitting project proposals BHC
conducts monitoring and evaluation of the project to report to the
Donor agencies. BHC also does monitoring and evaluation of other projects
on request.
- Networking
Networking aims at connecting local NGOs with organisations, churches
and individuals in The Netherlands and other countries to raise money
for projects. We also connect the needs of local NGOs with the services
of other local NGOs and experts.
- Budgeting and
Financial advice
We assist in realistic budgeting and offer financial management
programmes
.
- Management
Information System
We help NGOs develop and document their organisational structure
and activities (Organisational Blueprint). This helps to clarify roles
and responsibilities of individuals within the organization and improve
transparency.
Example
of an MIS exercise: A 12-month guidance was offered to the Department
of Animal Husbandry (DAH) via the Indo Swiss Project Andhra Pradesh
(ISPA). Close collaboration with the DAH, ISPA staff and a software
developer resulted in the implementation of a 5 module MIS.
- Production of
Information material
BHC writes, designs
and publishes manuals on subjects of Development and Animal Husbandry.
Translation of the manuals into local languages is also done. NGO
activities are documented by shooting videos. BHC also assists NGOs
in photo-documentation.
- Website creation
and management
For NGOs, organisations and groups the internet is invaluable
as means of networking and information collection and dissemination.
BHC's expertise
also includes creation i.e. design and development of
websites and website
management.
